Old Gray Mare

I wish I could take credit for this. It is by far the all-time family favorite ode to Lucia, especially when read aloud — and I do mean LOUD.  This work was composed by my sister Janelle on the huge manual Underwood on Daddy’s desk circa 1962, I believe. And yes, it did have a purple ribbon, though we never knew why.

Her bread is souffle, her buttermilk, champaigne…

    This is wonderful!

Lucia passed away peacefully on October 4. She was buried in her blue jeans with a garden spade, a coffee cup, and the original copy of this poem, which she had saved in a dresser drawer for almost 50 years.
